Prepare A To-Go Bag to Grab Quickly
Prepare A To-Go Bag to Grab Quickly

There’s a difference between living in fear and living prepared.

Preparedness is not panic.

It is empowerment.

When we’ve experienced trauma—fires, storms, unexpected loss—our nervous system remembers. One of the most healing things we can do for ourselves is create systems that restore a sense of safety.

During and after a disaster, we sometimes don’t know what to do. The shock alone can freeze us.

The first fire I experienced, I left with only the clothes on my back, my cell phone, and my car keys.

Three years later, another fire struck. This time, I left carrying my To-Go Bag and two backpacks.

That difference mattered.

Preparation does not remove trauma—but it reduces chaos.

Contact Your Renters Insurance

Whether you have visible damage or not, contact your renters insurance after a disaster. Even if nothing seems wrong.

Having the event documented creates a record—especially important if complications arise later.

It’s a small step that protects you in the long run.

Make a “To-Go” Bag

Disasters move quickly. You may not have time to gather what you need.

Having a bag ready provides something powerful:

peace of mind.

Knowing you can grab one bag and go reduces panic significantly.

🌿 To-Go Bag Ideas

  • Copies of important documentation

  • Clothes (underwear, jeans, shirts, shoes, socks, sweatshirt, pajamas)

  • Hygiene essentials (toothpaste, toothbrush, travel shampoo/conditioner, etc.)

  • Paper and pen (electronics may not work)

  • Phone charger

  • Jacket

  • Winter gear (gloves, hat, scarf)

  • List of medications

  • List of doctors and their numbers

  • Emergency contact list

  • Swiss Army knife

  • Headlamp (I found one for $1 at Walmart in the sporting section)

  • Duct tape

This is simply a starting idea. Customize your bag to your own needs.

Preparing for Extended Power Loss

In early 2026, I lost power for 2.5 days due to an ice storm in our area.

If you plan on staying home during an extended outage, preparation becomes even more important.

Here are a few things that helped:

  • Non-perishable foods

  • Plenty of water

  • Lots of blankets

  • A portable charging station (so you’re not charging your phone in your car in freezing temperatures)

  • Seal windows and doors with blankets or bubble wrap to preserve heat

  • Stay in the warmest interior area of your home

I stayed in my walk-in closet, which was the most insulated area available.

Preparedness isn’t about assuming the worst.

It’s about creating stability so your nervous system can feel safer if something happens again.

When we build safety intentionally, we rebuild confidence.

You are not powerless.

You are capable.

Gentle Closing

This month we’ve talked about trauma, grounding, rebuilding after anxiety, and now preparedness.

Healing isn’t just emotional—it’s practical too.

When we care for both, we strengthen ourselves in ways we don’t always see immediately.

✨ If you are navigating anxiety, trauma, or rebuilding your sense of safety, I continue to offer a complimentary one-card intuitive reading via email.

Grounding with the Earth

When we hear the word grounding, we often picture bare feet in the grass, sunlight on our face, and fresh air filling our lungs.

And yes, nature is powerful.

But what happens when you can’t go outside? What if the weather isn’t safe, your energy is low, or anxiety makes leaving feel overwhelming?

Grounding is not about location.

It’s about connection.

You can ground yourself anywhere.

Whether you are sitting in your bedroom, resting on your couch, or lying in bed, your body can still connect to the steady, supportive energy of the Earth.

A Simple Indoor Grounding Visualization

Close your eyes.

Take a slow, steady breath.

Now imagine roots growing from the bottoms of your feet.

See them extending downward—through the floor, through the foundation of your home, deep into the soil beneath you.

Watch those roots grow stronger and thicker.

They wrap securely into the earth, anchoring you.

Feel the steadiness.

Feel the support.

The Earth does not require you to stand outside to receive its stability. It is always beneath you.

As you breathe, imagine any anxious or restless energy gently flowing down through those roots—releasing into the ground. In return, imagine calm, steady energy rising back up to you.

You are supported.

You are anchored.

You are safe in this moment.

Grounding does not have to be elaborate. It can be quiet. Subtle. Gentle.

Especially during seasons of healing, when the nervous system is recalibrating, small grounding practices can make a profound difference.

Some days you may not have the energy to “do more.

”And that’s okay.

You don’t need to go anywhere to reconnect.

You are already exactly where you need to be.

Rebuilding Self

After a challenging experience—whether it’s a storm, emotional upheaval, or a period of anxiety—it can feel unsettling to step back into “normal life.” Even when the immediate situation has passed, our nervous system may still be catching up.

Healing doesn’t mean everything suddenly feels okay again. Often, it looks like small adjustments, quiet awareness, and learning how to listen to what your body and mind actually need.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reminded that recovery is not linear. Sleep patterns can be disrupted. Appetite can shift. Anxiety may lessen but still show up unexpectedly. This doesn’t mean we are failing—it means our system is recalibrating.

One of the most important things we can do after stress or trauma is rebuild a sense of safety. Safety doesn’t come from forcing ourselves to “move on.” It comes from consistency, gentleness, and allowing the body to trust again.

Here are a few grounding practices that can help during this phase:

1. Create simple routines

Going to bed and waking up at similar times, even if sleep isn’t perfect, helps signal safety to the nervous system.

2. Nourish gently

If appetite feels off, focus on small, comforting foods and staying hydrated. Healing doesn’t require perfection—just care.

3. Limit stimulation

Reducing noise, screen time, and emotional overload can make a noticeable difference when anxiety is easing but still present.

4. Check in with yourself honestly

Ask: What do I need today—not what I “should” be doing?

Rebuilding after anxiety or emotional disruption takes time. Some days will feel lighter, others heavier. Both are part of the process.

You are not behind.

You are not weak.

You are learning how to feel safe again.

This month, my intention is to continue sharing honest conversations around healing, nervous system regulation, and intuitive self-care—along with practical ways to support yourself during difficult seasons.

Healing doesn’t rush. And neither should you.

If you’re navigating anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or a period of rebuilding, I offer intuitive guidance rooted in compassion and lived experience.

✨ I’m currently offering a complimentary one-card intuitive reading via email for those needing gentle insight.
