Preparing for the Unexpected: Creating Your To-Go Bag & Emotional Safety Kit

Hello Beautiful Souls,

One thing life continues to teach me is that change can come when we least expect it. Sometimes it arrives gently… and sometimes it arrives in flames. After experiencing two fires — two life-altering moments that reshaped the way I see safety, preparedness, and healing — I’ve learned how important it is to be ready both physically and emotionally.

This isn’t about living in fear. This is about honoring your safety, your peace, and your beautiful spirit.

Today, I want to share the practical steps that supported me, the emotional tools that helped me rebuild, and ways you can begin preparing yourself too.

🔥 Part 1: Why a To-Go Bag Matters

When disaster happens, the mind goes into shock. You don’t think clearly. You act on instinct. And you often walk away without half the things you need.

During my first fire, I only had my clothes, my cell phone, and my keys. I didn’t have time, clarity, or awareness to grab the things that mattered. Even when a family member texted me a list, my mind couldn’t process it.

That experience stayed with me.

So after that fire, I created a To-Go Bag — something I could grab in seconds if I ever needed to evacuate again.

When the second fire happened, I was still terrified… but I walked out with more than the clothes on my back. And that gave me a sense of grounding in a moment that felt completely out of control.

🎒 Part 2: What to Put in Your To-Go Bag

Here are items you might consider adding to your own bag, tailored to your needs and lifestyle:

Important Essentials

  • Copies of ID & important documents

  • List of medications

  • Doctor’s numbers

  • Emergency contact sheet

Practical & Comfort Items

  • Phone charger + portable battery

  • Hygiene essentials (toothbrush, deodorant, wipes, etc.)

  • Underwear, socks, shirts, jeans

  • Pajamas

  • Jacket

  • Comfortable shoes

Emergency Tools

  • Swiss Army knife

  • Headlamp or flashlight

  • Duct tape

  • Small first aid kit

Personal Items

  • Spare glasses

  • Small notebook + pen

  • Extra medication (if needed)

Your bag doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be yours — something that brings a sense of preparedness and peace.

Part 3: Your Emotional Safety Kit

Being physically prepared is one thing. But being emotionally supported during and after trauma… that’s a whole other journey.

Your Emotional Safety Kit can be a box, a small pouch, or even a folder. It’s something you turn to when your emotions feel loud, heavy, or overwhelming.

A Few Healing Stones

Here are a few ideas to include:

  • A grounding stone or crystal

  • Journal or small notebook

  • Calming affirmation cards

  • A photo or keepsake that reminds you of comfort

  • A small essential oil roller

  • A list of grounding practices

  • Your favorite comforting quote

Your emotional safety kit becomes a soft landing place — a reminder that you have the tools to regulate, release, and reconnect.

✍️ Part 4: Tools That Supported My Recovery

Walking through fire — physically and emotionally — changes you. And healing doesn’t happen overnight.

Here are the tools that supported me and continue to carry me forward:

🌻 1. Daily Journaling

Writing became my lifeline. It helped me create space for the emotions that had nowhere else to go.

Some days I wrote pages.

Some days I wrote a single quote.

Some days I scribbled with crayons.

Every day counted.

🌻 2. Reiki

Reiki helped me retrain my mind and soothe the nervous system that had been living in constant alert. It softened the fear. It connected me back to myself. It reminded me that healing is possible, even on the days I still tremble.

🌻 3. Breathwork & Grounding

Deep breathing. Placing my hand on my heart. Sitting outside under the sky. These simple moments anchored me when everything felt unstable.

🌞 Final Thoughts

Beautiful Soul, preparedness is not fear-based. It is an act of love. A way to honor your life, your safety, and your peace.

I hope this inspires you to create your own To-Go Bag and Emotional Safety Kit, so that no matter what life brings, you feel even a little more supported.

I’m here for you — always.

With love,
